While in college, he developed an interest in politics and started working in the Californian Republican Party as its political director even before graduating.

He worked as the director for two more years before leaving it to work somewhere else. He then joined Guerra Dewberry Coody and worked as its vice president.

He worked with the Coddy for only two years and joined the League of California Cities, where he got offered the position of public affairs director.

While working in the League of California Cities, he also worked to pass the Local taxpayer Protection Act, which prevented the state from raiding the local government revenues.

Madrid worked with the League of California Cities for the next seven years and took his leave in 2008 to join a public relations firm GrassrootLab, where he works to this day.
