Loren Cunningham’s Early Life and Education

Born in 1935, in California, Loren was called to be a missionary when he was 13 years old, at a youth assembly in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Parents of Loren Cunningham – Tom and Jewell Cunningham were migratory Assembly of God pastors who migrated along with their three children, Phyllis, Loren, and Janice, as they began to establish churches throughout the Southwest.

About his educational background, he attended University High School in West Los Angeles and graduated in December 1952. Then, right after, in 1953, his first outreach- an Easter break trip to Mexico was marked along with 11 other youths.

A year before joining the Assemblies of God’s Central Bible Institute and Seminary in Springfield, Missouri, he attended Santa Monica City College and the University of California, Los Angeles.

Moreover, Loren was the student body president at CBIS and was also a member of The King’s Magnifiers, a singing quartet.

Loren earned degrees in Christian Education and Bible and Theology from CBI in 1957. When he returned to California, he accepted a position at Calvary Assembly in Inglewood as a youth pastor and musical director.

He pursued his schooling as well, getting a B.A. in Education from the University of Southern California in 1958.

From 1958 to January 1960, he completed course work for his M.S. in Administration and Supervision of Education at the University of Southern California.

YWAM

Loren established YWAM with his wife Darlene in 1960 in Switzerland. Cunningham claims that he got a vision for YWAM while traveling in the Bahamas in 1956 as a part of a gospel quartet.

According to some sources of ours, we have come to know that during this interval time, he saw waves on the shorelines of the continents on a globe map, getting larger and larger until they covered the entire landmass.

This was the vision that inspired him in the founding of Youth with a Mission, an organization that provides missionary opportunities for Christian youth after high school.

This establishment was done after almost four years of him gaining the vision. Loren and his wife together served in leadership capacities in YWAM and YWAM’s University of the Nations until his death.

He had met with hundreds of significant leaders from evangelical, charismatic, and Pentecostal churches, as well as those representing the oldest Christian traditions, in recent years to ask for their support in this cause.

Loren was instrumental in launching a variety of Christian endeavors, including the University of the Nations, Pray OMT, YWAM Ships, YWAM Olympic Outreaches, the International Torch Run, and Cardinal Points Prayer Days, among others.
